I maybe way off base but could it have been some kind of inversion that suddenly broke down causing us to see the strange radar pattern. Am I even close?

At the 6 pm news they had the Cape's rain totals at .08" which is exactly what you were showing for the day. ( .03" just after midnight and .05" up to that time.
