I have a funny feeling that IGOR is going to be a big one headed for somewhere from Central Florida to South Carolina. That name is very spooky. Thoughts ?

I agree, the name Igor itself is a Norse/Russian name that means "Warrior, Archer".... its the perfect name for a Hurricane....

Hey Mike, We're bloggin about Igor on the models thread. But while I'm here, ya......where the HEC did they come up with that name Just doesn't have that lovely spanish ring to it like Juan. On the other hand do we know how they pick the names Remember 'Ivan The Terrible' ? I think he was English...No?
Maybe Lou or somebody can shed some light on the name picking process

From the NHC site.
"Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. They are now maintained and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization. The original name lists featured only women's names. In 1979, men's names were introduced and they alternate with the women's names. Six lists are used in rotation. Thus, the 2009 list will be used again in 2015." _________________ LOU

Zinnia, Thanks, I will brush up on my history first next time!
Lou, The World Meteorology Organization must rotate or alternate names from various nationalities to be fair about the process But since so many originate over Africa, shouldn't they have a few African names like OBAMA
