I thought I saw something coming off the coast earlier and now it has it's act together a little bit. Good call on this one and thanks for finding it. Models seem to drift it up to the NE almost immediately so I'm wondering if this is the storm that Jeff was talking about hitting the east coast. _________________ Chris

By the way guys, I have the buoy data posted under the tropics section. Theres only 3 working zones (Florida, East and West Carib). I hope to complete the rest sometime soon but wanted to give you guys a glimpse of what it is about. Just click on the buoy of choice and it displays the data in standard units instead of metric and comes directly from the NDBC. Updates every hour. _________________ Chris

Yes..........this should be the system that the GFS latched on to. The initial run is not the full model suite so the NE track should not be heavily weighted IMO. If this storm were to develop quickly off Africa, statistically, it would have a greater chance to recurve than if it slowely develops as it heads towards the Windward Islands. I'm just surprised that they latched on to this so quickly off Africa, when there is still a decent chance we have a homegrown situation in S. GOM before this system is half way across the pond....................

Me too Jeff! I haven't seen any type of discussion at all regarding the system down in the Western Caribbean/S GOM. I was hoping to get more information on it from the next discussion adv. but nothing much came out. Maybe tomorrow we will get some more info but as of right now it still does look quite impressive. I guess the NHC doesnt feel comfortable enough to talk about until it's in our backyards... _________________ Chris

NASA has a high altitude research mission taking place at the Cape Verde Islands. The NHC is receiving bonus info. The NASA mission is to study the tropical waves as they roll off Africa. They will be there until well into September. _________________ This post is for discussion purposes only. Please refer to the National Hurricane Center for official information.
