The problem I'm seeing for a lot of my customers near the Gulf is that they hit saltwater at about 80 feet. Less than 60 feet, they have iron-rich water that puts a nice coat of rust on their sidewalks. So a lot of these folks have wells in this middle range and they are already starting to dry up. This is going to be a major challenge for all of western Florida.

In the past 10-15 years, most wells for drinking water in the Cape were drilled to 180'. Some in the SW sections are nearly twice that deep down to the Lower Hawthorne Aquifer.
The original Geological surveys of the Cape done in the late 1950's show the waterline to be from just below the surface to about 5' in depth!!

Bob, I'm sorry, but, that might be hard to believe because the Hawthorne Aquifer is 650 to 700 feet deep.
From the City of Cape Coral's web site:
"The City of Cape Coral utilizes reverse osmosis (RO) to treat its’ water which is supplied by 23 deep wells. The majority of these wells are in the lower Hawthorne Aquifer at a depth of 650 to 700 feet."
This thread is begining to sound like a drought and well thread.
You are right...that's where the City gets their water. Point is wells have been drilled to the 340-360' levels to avoid salt water intrusion. In 1989, when wells were going to 80' ,I had mine go to 180 to be safe. More recently, especially in the Sw cape, wells have gone to 340' depth ("Upper" Hawthorne!) The lower Hawthorne is an ancient aquifer. Water in it drains from Georgia and North Florida. It's water is estimated to be 10,000 years old. Please correct if I'm wrong again
