Sounds like a good idea. Didn't they try something similar in the 70's with operation Storm Fury? I find it funny how they are already worried about a lawsuit when they haven't even had an opportunity to test it on an actual storm. But if the science and physics can change the course I'd say give it a shot and worry about the lawyers later. _________________ Chris

I have read in a couple of places that they tried this experiment secretly on Katrina(conspiracy theory) You will notice Katrinas northwest side began to fall apart immediately prior to landfall. Now as I said, I read this and am not convinced. Just passing on info. _________________ GO NOLES

Gee, the conspiracy theory I heard was that Bush instructed the Navy to use huge fans and "steer" Katrina into New Orleans. That's what I get for checking out CNN.

Regarding Katrina, the northwest quad weakened because of dry air entrainment.
I think that news article is more sensationalism and an attempt to get more research money for the program. The potential ramifications are like a science fiction movie, if it worked. Scenario ... What if a Cat 4 was heading for Tampa and they decided to sacrifice Cape Coral instead? Think about it. Choosing who gets clobbered would be decided by a human rather than chance. There is no doubt in my mind that this so-called discovery is another waste of time and money. They can drop all the crap they want into the core of a Hurricane and it will do nothing. A TC pulls in moisture from up to 1000 miles away and it constantly replenishes itself minute by minute, hour by hour, and day by day. If we were to rate what we know about Hurricanes on a scale of one to ten we would probably be at number five. People seem to forget that Hurricanes serve a very important purpose by transporting heat away from the tropics and into the northern latitudes. Also many areas of the Atlantic basin which includes the Caribbean nations and islands and all the states that border the Gulf of Mexico rely on rainfall from TC's. I really don't see any way this could possibly work. _________________ This post is for discussion purposes only. Please refer to the National Hurricane Center for official information.
