Tonight's Storms and Emily

First off, this evenings light show can be traced to a plume of moisture that you can follow from Sanibel...NE off the FL/GA coast up to VA and West into the reminants of Dennis over Indiana...Still quite an impressive circulation exists. In fact this circulation is so vast that it has pumped a great deal of heat into the High pressure ridge off FLA and increased it's strength. This IMO assures (as much as you can be sure about weather!) that Emily will be steered safely underneath South FL. and probably past the Yucatan before it can make a true turn North. This is most likely a Mexico or extreme S. Texas Hurricane which will most likely not become anymore than a Cat 2. But before we breath a sigh of relief, next week at this time another wave will be coming West and with Dennis dissipated, the Bermuda High will ridge westward to bridge the gap Dennis caused between it and the Rocky MTN High (No John Denver jokes). Besides causing a massive heat wave for most of the Northern portion of the country(& S.Canada) from the Rockies to interior New England , this will open the door for the next tropical system to either hit the East Coast of FL. or run the Eastern Seaboard across Cape Hatteras and into S. New England. All and all a very exciting period of weather for us "nuts" to talk about

That was an impressive storm this afternoon with countless lightning strikes. The highest rate for strikes/min was almost 550 which occured during the peak of the storm. Pretty intense. As of right now the lightning detector has gathered almost 56000 strikes for the day. The counter resets at midnight and runs for 24 hours then resets again at zero. As of right now there is very little intensity left in that storm and its moving way offshore with around 9 strikes/min. Lets hope your right about Emily, Id hate to see another hurricane hit Florida in the same month. Exclamation

I just saw the 11 o'clock advisory from NOAA. Emily is gaining some strength and now has maximum sustained winds of 60mph with higher gusts. From the look of the track it appears to be moving SW which is odd. Idea

Chris, It is not uncommon for a tropical system at that latitude to get influenced...kinda "sucked in" to South America. Don't be surprised if it comes as close as Aruba! This also lends credence to my above Yucatan- Mexico/SE Texas path.
