There is now a 1007 mb low center just east of the Mexican coast right where the heaviest convection is firing. This is just south of the stalled frontal boundary and is in an area of much less shear as opposed to the northern Gulf where the upper level winds from the west are ripping along at 40+ knots. The NHC said they don't expect development due to strong upper level winds but this low center is south of the strong shear. This will need to be watched closely and should the low deepen I would expect strong gusty winds to impact the Texas coast and the oil rigs due to a combination of the low and the resulting pressure gradient. That's regardless of tropical development.

The shear is high to it's north. The fact that it's able to produce intense convection with cloud tops of -80C shows that it's in an area of low shear. Based on the current steering flow it would head north to near Corpus Christi.

Lake Charles, AFD is talking about heavy wind and rains...not committing to a tropical situation.
If I was on an oil rig, I'd be concerned. Good call, Lou.
